Finally Gala Saturday arrived with sunshine and a light breeze in the morning, but clouding over towards the afternoon. There was rain too but that didn’t stop the fun, as people sheltered in various tents and the Community Centre either enjoying refreshments, more shopping or just catching up with friends and neighbours.
The main marquee housed the popular Cake & Bake stall, manned as always by the Slains & Collieston WI ladies. The tombola stall took up almost a third of the length of the tent and provided much entertainment as visitors tried to win anything from a bottle of water to a bottle of wine! There was also a bookstall with a wide variety of book topics on offer, and a plant stall with both indoor and outdoor plants and seeds to choose from.
The talented Shirley of Mill Cottage Flowers made beautiful flower headbands. While both Forvie Nature Reserve and EGCP did a ‘show & tell’ of items found in the local area / reserve.
As always the toy stall had a great selection of toy, games and jigsaws for all ages.
While raffle tickets from the Community Council, were available alongside Collieston 2027 calendars & cards along with prints by local artist Bryce Thomson’s work was from the Collieston Harbour Heritage Group’s table.
Local families had stalls selling knitted animals, 3D printed items (As shown above), Disney Plushes and handmade keyrings and bracelets. Local martial arts branch Yee’s Hung Ga Ellon had a wonderful selection of 3D printed dragon eggs, bracelets, purses, and bells.
The RNLI was selling fabulous items to raise funds and Home Energy Scotland had lots of information for visitors on how to save water or improve thier houses.
Outside our local Coastguard set up expecting to have a fun afternoon of rope throwing and chat about life in the coastguard, however they were almost immediately called out to an incident at local new Slains Castle in Cruden Bay.
Collieston rowing group CORC (As shown above), had one of their rowing boats ‘The Admiral Redsocks’ (named after former village resident Rear Admiral Steve Ritchie), set up as part of an information and recruitment drive.
The BBQ was fired up feeding everyone with ‘huge’ sausages and burgers ably manned by the fabulous team from The Collieston Beach Shelter.
Alan Anderson kindly brought his vintage tractors along for photo opportunites and tractor talk.
Just for fun you could try and win a coconut at the popular Coconut Shy or beat the goal keeper and score a goal! Local group SeaChange opened up the community garden for folk to wander and look at all their hard work or just sit and enjoy the views.
After the brief but heavy downpour, everyone was treated to a display of Tai Chi and a dragon dance by Yee’s Hung Ga Ellon.
In the community centre along side the teas, coffee and cake there was an art display by Kelpie Art Group and a World Cup 2026 Sticker Swap.
James at Forvie Outdoors, relocated his woodfired suna @tethsauna from Cransdale to the pier for the weekend, offering a sauna and swim for anyone to book. He was very busy all weekend, offering all proceeds to the Collieston Habour Heritage Group who work hard to maintain the pier and beach area.
A very busy day with lots to do and see.
After the visitors had left for the day, the village danced late into the night with the Crynoch Ceilidh Band giving the new flooring a good test as the evening wore on.
